sue from derby (Tuesday, September 20, 2005)
The Picture shown is of the
old baisen opposite the Fulbeck pub, just up the prom, as a kid we used
to play up there, I was about ten when they emptied it of rowing boats
so it was about 37 years ago. Apparently at the turn of the Century swimming
lessons were given there.
I was born in Mablethorpe, down Waterloo Road, it was a nice place to
grow up in......

Of course this is the boating
lake ! Evocative ... I won 2 childhood beauty competitions around this
space during the early 1960's.
Mablethorpe is a truly special place ... I saw Billy Butlin here .. Dunes
Theatre competitions - Uncle Denis & Auntie June taking early morning
games on the beach before the daily performance (Still have photographs
on stage from 1950's/60s) .... Waiting for local newspaper updates on
the Dunes Theatre competition winners. Dashing to Camms Photographers
to catch the photographs taken by in-house photographers, hoping to see
pictures of oneself winning competitions .. Dreaming that one day I might
grow up to become Miss Mablethorpe. My grandparents lived here. I went
to school in Mablethorpe briefly during 1967 .. Crossing the dykes to
get to the beach was an exciting experience .. 3 primitive, undulating
string footbridges without foothold - huge gaps in the wooden slatwork
- unacceptable health and safety requirement today - breathtaking fun
for us then !
Dunes to die for ! Running, diving in the sand, disturbing secret lovers
! Magnificent fairground slide and candy floss to climb over ! So many
memories ... on.. and ..on
