Mablethorpe Tesco Opens

Thursday the 28th of October 2021 saw the long-awaited opening of Mablethorpe’s Tesco Supermarket, located just off Golf Road on Peter Chambers Way.

Planning permission was originally turned down in 2011 by ELDC amid accusations of bias toward the alternative location, occupied by the Station Sports Centre, which they own. Residents actively campaigned both for and against, and the decision was eventually reversed. Sadly, by this time Tesco’s business was having something of a wobble, and they paused investment, only recommitting to the project in late 2020.

The new 20,000 sq ft store sells food, clothing and household products. The site also includes an unmanned petrol station, EV charging points and cash machines. Home deliveries will continue to come from either Grimsby or Skegness, depending on your location.

The new store has created around 115 jobs (presumably the vast majority of which will be year round) and has already established links with several local charities and food banks it intends to support.

As well as offering local more choice and employment opportunities, supporters hope it encourages more people from the surrounding small towns and villages to shop in Mablethorpe instead of driving to places like Skegness and Grimsby. As a knock-on effect, the Co-Op in the town centre is currently being refurbished and divided into two, creating a smaller supermarket but making space for the arrival of Boyes. It is also understood that a B&M Store will be opened on the Golf Road site in the near future.

The store is open 7am to 11pm Monday to Saturday and 10am to 4pm on Sundays.
